1. The Tree Is Leaning Suddenly

If a tree begins leaning after a storm or heavy rain, it could signal root or trunk failure. Sudden leaning is a red flag — the tree may topple at any moment.

2. Cracks in the Trunk or Large Branches

Deep cracks in the trunk or major limbs weaken the tree’s structure. These splits often occur after windstorms or when a tree is diseased. A cracked tree can drop large limbs without warning.

3. Dead or Hanging Limbs

Large, dead branches hanging high in a tree are a major safety concern. These “widow makers” can fall unexpectedly and injure people, pets, or damage property below.

4. Root Damage or Soil Uplift

Roots provide stability. If you notice exposed roots, soil mounding, or signs that the ground is lifting on one side of the tree, it may mean the root system is compromised — and the tree could fall.

5. Rot, Fungus, or Hollow Sections

Mushrooms at the base of your tree, hollow trunks, or soft wood are signs of decay. Once rot sets in, the tree becomes structurally weak and unsafe to keep standing.

6. Your Tree Is Aging and Showing Decline

Like people, trees have a natural lifespan. As they get older, they may stop producing healthy leaves, grow fewer new branches, or develop brittle wood. Older trees are more likely to fail during Fort Bend County’s high winds and heavy rains.
